Gopal from the Sanosra Gaushala has a topnotch mating record

If you thought only A-list Bollywood stars had their dates packed for the next one year, a bull in Kutch district's Sanosra village is here to change your view. Gopal, a 14 year-old bull from the Sanosra Gaushala is in demand all over Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana, with interested individuals listed on a waiting chart for an opportunity to gets their cows mated with him. His schedule, says Sanosra Gaushala Trustee Paresh Sinh Jhala, is packed till the start of 2013. His schedule has been especially tight for the last eight months, forcing the trustee to introduce a by-appointment-only system.

The reason why Gopal is in heavy demand is that he tends to produce 'powerful offsprings' like Vijay who is barely 4.5 years old, but is already shows signs of being ready to mate. Gopal's female offsprings have managed a 15 to 17-litre milk yield per day; that's 1.5 per cent higher than regular cows, says the trustee. While the average bull tends to mate about 50 times in his lifetime, Gopal has already impregnated 486 cows. And he still has another seven years of his mating cycle to go.

Gopal arrived at the Sanosra Gaushala five and a half years ago when a Kutchi gentleman based in Australia gifted Gopal to the gaushala, impressed with the work they were doing. Jhala says the reason Gopal was picked was because his ancestry can be traced to the Gir cow, belonging to a famous milk cattle breed of India found in the Gir hills of Gujarat and the forests of Kathiawar.

Like every busy star, Gopal gets time off too -- twice each year around June and December -- when he abstains from mating.
